1944-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-022
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team, WDDO-022 of the 1944-S Lincoln wheat cent is distinguished by an extra eyelid visible south of the normal eyelid on Lincoln's profile. The obverse carries a serif-style S mintmark and is also listed as WRPM-009, an S/S West repunched mintmark, making this a die marriage that combines two collectible variety types on a single obverse die. Additional obverse die markers include two short die scratches below the N of IN and the G of GOD and a die gouge appearing as a dot in the field to the left of the back of the bust. The reverse shows a short die gouge inside the lower portion of the first A of AMERICA. The combination of a doubled die obverse with a repunched mintmark on the same die creates a dual-variety coin that appeals to both DDO and RPM collectors. The extra eyelid is the primary pickup point for the doubled die attribution, while the westward secondary S impression confirms the repunched mintmark. San Francisco struck over 282 million Lincoln cents in 1944.
