Description

Under Wexler Variety ID: 1944-S 1¢ WDDO-014, the fourteenth doubled die obverse variety for the 1944-S Lincoln Wheat cent occupies the middle range of what has become one of the most extensively documented DDO date-mint groups in the Wheat cent series. Attributed by the Wexler Team, WDDO-014 joins at least seventeen other cataloged DDO varieties sharing the same San Francisco mintmark and wartime shell-case composition. The fourteen-position in the sequence places this variety in a zone where doubling is genuine and catalogable but typically requires more careful examination than the showcase varieties occupying the single-digit positions. San Francisco's role in the wartime cent program was significant: the mint struck over 282 million cents in 1944, second only to Denver's 430 million, and the combined output from all three facilities ensured that the nation's enormous wartime demand for small change was met despite the diversion of standard copper to military use. Each DDO variety in the 1944-S sequence documents a unique instance of hub misalignment during die preparation — a permanent record of a momentary mechanical imperfection frozen into steel and then transferred to millions of copper-alloy cents. The cumulative documentation of fourteen or more such events for a single date-mint enriches our understanding of die shop operations during the height of World War II.
