San Francisco struck approximately 282.8 million cents in 1944 using the wartime shell-case bronze alloy (95% copper, 5% zinc, recycled from spent cartridge casings), a composition employed from 1944 through 1946 to conserve tin for military use. The mintmark carries the MMS-005 designation with straight serifs, indicating a specific mintmark style that provides an additional die identification marker beyond the doubled eyelid itself.
