Description

Leading the doubled die obverse census for the 1944-S Lincoln Wheat Cent, DDO-001 exhibits strong extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and WE TRUST, indicating a substantial hub-doubling event across multiple design elements. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1645 and DMR-013, three progressive stages are documented: Stage A in early die state remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows the obverse at mid-die state with a die scratch between the upper ON of ONE, and Stage C reveals both obverse and reverse in late die state. The mintmark is cataloged as MMS-005 with straight serifs, adding a mintmark variety element. The 1944-S was struck at San Francisco during World War II, returning to the standard bronze alloy of 95% copper and 5% tin-and-zinc after the 1943 steel cent emergency. As the premier DDO for this date and mint, DDO-001 holds the top census position representing the strongest obverse hub-doubling among 1944-S die pairings.
