1944 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-014
Error
Description
DDO-014 on the 1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent is a VarietyVista-cataloged doubled die obverse, cataloged UVC-3427 and DMR-018. The doubling appears as a medium spread below IBERTY of LIBERTY — a downward spread in the lower portion of the letters, most apparent under 5x–8x magnification on the bottom strokes of the letters I, B, E, R, T, and Y. Three die stages document the variety's progression. Stage A (EDS) shows the variety in its earliest die state. Stage B (MDS) carries a die clash behind the hair and neck, plus a die crack on the shoulder — intermediate die-state markers that link coins to a specific progression point. Stage C (LDS) develops further clash evidence through the C of CENT extending to the left stem, and a light die crack from the left wheat tip to the rim. The 1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at Philadelphia without a mintmark. The Stage C markers — the clash through C of CENT and the wheat-tip rim crack — are the most readily visible features on late-die-state DDO-014 examples and can be identified without resolving the finer obverse doubling in LIBERTY.
