1944 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011

Description

Displaying medium spread both inside and outside the upper curve of the 9 in the date, this 1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent DDO-011 concentrates its doubling on one of the most diagnostic numerals in the four-digit date. The upper loop of the 9 provides excellent geometry for detecting secondary impressions, as even modest hub displacement creates visible separation between the inner and outer contours of the numeral. Three die stages document this die's production arc under catalog codes UVC-2923 and DMR-015. Stage A at early die state remains unconfirmed, suggesting few specimens survive from the die's initial use. Stage B places both the obverse and reverse in mid-die state, representing the confirmed production window. Stage C at late die state is also unconfirmed. The 1944 Philadelphia Mint cent was struck during the height of World War II production, when enormous mintages generated numerous die varieties across the Wheat Cent series. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDO-011 rewards focused examination of the upper portion of the 9 under at least 5x magnification.
