Description

Struck on wartime shell casing brass salvaged from military cartridge cases, the 1944 DDO-007 presents medium spread to the north manifesting as an extra eyelid on Lincoln's portrait — the doubled contour sitting above the normal eyelid line. Cataloged by VarietyVista with UVC-1614 and DMR-008, this variety is documented at Stage B with the obverse at Mid Die State. The reverse is listed as DDR-003 at Mid Die State, making this a dual-variety die marriage where both sides carry documented hub doubling — an uncommon convergence increasing the variety's significance. The 1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent holds additional historical importance as a shell casing cent, produced from recycled brass recovered from spent military cartridge cases during World War II, giving the coins a distinctive golden color different from standard bronze. Brenner's Lincoln portrait was in its thirty-sixth year at 19mm. The northward eyelid spread indicates the secondary hub impression shifted upward, displacing the eyelid contour to create an extra line above the original. Examine Lincoln's eye for the extra upper eyelid, and inspect the reverse for DDR-003 doubling to confirm the dual-variety die pairing.
