Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-1609 and DMR-003, this 1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent DDO-002 exhibits extra thickness on the date, LIBERTY, and IN GOD WE TRUST — a broadly distributed hub displacement affecting the three primary obverse inscription groups, creating detectable thickening across widely separated areas of the die face. Four die stages provide a comprehensive production timeline: Stage A is early die state (EDS, unconfirmed); Stage B is mid-die-state (MDS, unconfirmed); Stage C shows both obverse and reverse in late die state (LDS); and Stage D shows very late die state (VLDS) with a die crack across the shoulder, a die crack running north up the lapel, and the reverse also in VLDS. The four-stage documentation — extending to VLDS — captures this die's service life from its fresh state through to near-terminal use, with the shoulder and lapel cracks in Stage D documenting the final phase of structural failure before the die was retired.
