1944 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-001
Error
Description
Medium spread on the numerals 194 of the date and the letters TY of LIBERTY identifies this as the primary doubled die obverse for the 1944 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent — the DDO-001 designation marks it as the first and most significant documented DDO for the date. VarietyVista catalogs it under UVC-1608 with DMR-002, tracking three die stages: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B where obverse and reverse are in Mid Die State, and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The 1944 Lincoln Cent holds unique compositional significance — it was struck on recycled brass shell casings from spent military ammunition, giving the wartime cents their distinctive golden hue. This copper-zinc alloy replaced the steel composition used in 1943 and differed from both the pre-war and post-war bronze formulations. Philadelphia struck an enormous 1.43 billion cents in 1944, the highest single-year cent production for any mint up to that point. The medium spread — stronger than "light" but not reaching "strong" classification — produces visible doubling on the date and LIBERTY without magnification on well-preserved specimens. The affected areas on the right side of the date (194) and right side of LIBERTY (TY) suggest a hub shift with a lateral component that concentrated the spread in those regions.
