1944 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Struck during World War II at Philadelphia, this 1944 Mercury Dime doubled die obverse displays strong spread toward the center on the date, Adolph Weinman's designer initials, and ERTY of LIBERTY. The centering direction creates thickened elements rather than the split-image look of outward-spreading doubled dies. Obverse markers include parallel die scratches running east from the upper I in LIBERTY and a short NW/SE scratch left of the lips. The reverse carries strong die clash remnants through the left olive branch and leaves — evidence the dies struck each other without a planchet — along with a scratch SW/NE above the first U in PLURIBUS. The clash remnants add interest beyond the primary doubling, documenting a separate production anomaly during this die pair's working life. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1944 10-cent WDDO-004, this is the fourth doubled die obverse for the 1944 Mercury Dime, struck in 90% silver composition.
