1944 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004
Error
Description
Strong Class VI spread combined with Class II separation on the date creates a dual-mechanism doubling pattern on WDDO-004 of the 1944 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent. Class VI distorted hub doubling produces a distortion-based displacement, while the overlapping Class II spread adds a center-directed component, resulting in a complex doubling signature that reflects two distinct types of hub misalignment during die production. The date numerals, bearing both classes of doubling simultaneously, provide a concentrated diagnostic zone where collectors can observe the interaction of these two mechanisms. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1944P-1DO-008, this variety carries dual attributions in the Wexler and Coppercoins systems. The 1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent, struck on standard bronze planchets after the 1943 zinc-coated steel emergency issue, belongs to the late wartime production era. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1944 1¢ WDDO-004, the dual-class doubling on the date makes this variety notable among mid-1940s Wheat Cent doubled dies. Strong Class VI extra thickness shows on the date, especially the lower 9. Extra thickness also shows on LIBERTY and to a lesser extent on IGWT. Die Markers: Obverse: A small die gouge protrudes from the lower right side of the N of IN. A die gouge can be found near the center of the nose. Reverse: A die scratch extends SE from the top right of the N in CENT.
