1944 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-019

Description

Attributed as Wexler 1944 1c WDDO-019 and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1944P-1DO-019, this doubled die obverse on a 1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits an extra eyelid south of the primary eyelid. Obverse die markers include a die gouge above the L in LIBERTY at the rim, a vertical die scratch through the left side of R in LIBERTY, die scratches running north from the forehead, vertical die scratches through IN GOD WE TRUST, and a die scratch under the ear. Reverse markers include curving vertical die scratches inside C, E, and T in CENT, and horizontal die scratches through RIBUS in PLURIBUS and the second dot. The extensive die marker catalog on both sides provides multiple attribution points beyond the primary doubled die feature. The 1944 Lincoln Cent was struck on shell-case copper planchets — recycled World War II brass cartridge cases — giving the coins a slightly different color and composition than standard pre-war bronze.
