1944 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-018
Error
Description
Showing a strong extra eyelid south of the primary eyelid, the 1944 Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDO-018 places its most dramatic doubling on Lincoln's portrait. The Wexler Team attributed this variety, cross-referencing it as CONECA 4-O-IV, indicating Class IV offset hub doubling. A die scratch running roughly vertically through the extra eyelid and nose provides a distinctive obverse marker, accompanied by multiple parallel die scratches angled north-northwest to south-southeast through LIBERTY and to the left of the date. On the reverse, bunched die scratches run vertically to the right of the left wheat stalk down to the first dot. Eyelid doubling varieties are among the most popular diagnostics in the Lincoln cent series because the extra line is often visible to the unaided eye, making the WDDO-018 an accessible variety for collectors at all levels. The vertical scratch through both the extra eyelid and nose simultaneously serves as a reliable pickup point for confirming this specific die.
