1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-027
Error
Description
Showing a P/P West displacement, this 1944 Philadelphia wartime silver Jefferson Nickel was documented by VarietyVista as RPM-027. Die markers UVC-475 / DMR-028 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C with a die crack from left dome south to steps through pillar #2 at LDS and obverse at LDS. The die crack traversing Monticello's architectural detail from the dome through a specific pillar documents advanced structural fatigue at an identifiable location on the reverse die. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1944-P features the oversized P mintmark above Monticello introduced in 1942. Each Philadelphia die received its P punch manually, and the westward displacement indicates the initial punch landed slightly east of the intended final position.
