Error
Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-170 and DMR-024, this 1944 Philadelphia wartime silver alloy Jefferson nickel displays a P/P repunched mintmark with the initial punch offset to the west. Stages A and C remain unconfirmed. Stage B at mid die state introduces numerous north-south die scratches on the upper reverse, with both sides in mid die state condition. The wartime silver alloy nickels of 1943-1945 were the first United States coins to bear a P mintmark for Philadelphia, placed prominently above Monticello to signal the non-standard composition. Repunched mintmarks on these issues are relatively common because each die required individual hand-punching of the oversized P, increasing the likelihood of positional errors. The north-south die scratches on the upper reverse in Stage B provide a useful secondary confirmation point beyond the mintmark examination itself.
