1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-020

Description

Cataloged under UVC-167 and DMR-021, the 1944-P wartime silver Jefferson Nickel RPM-020 is a repunched mintmark variety recorded through three die stages in the VarietyVista reference. Stage A is early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B is the anchor stage, confirmed as early mid-die state. Stage C is late die state, currently unconfirmed. The 1944-P was struck in the distinctive 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese wartime alloy, with the large P mint mark placed over the Monticello dome — a placement introduced in 1942 so that the alloy change could be identified and the silver recovered after the war. No directional information for the secondary punch shift is noted in the current census record, making close comparison with adjacent RPM entries advisable when confirming attribution.
