1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-019

Description

The 1944-P Jefferson Nickel Wartime Silver Alloy RPM-019 is a repunched mintmark variety cataloged with die marker codes UVC-166 and DMR-020. Jefferson Nickels struck 1942–1945 used a 35% silver alloy (copper, silver, manganese) to conserve nickel for wartime production; they carry a large P mintmark above Monticello — itself a wartime first, as Philadelphia had not previously marked its regular coinage. On RPM-019 the P mintmark was punched with a secondary impression displaced East and West of the primary mark. Stage A is early die state but unconfirmed. Stage B shows both obverse and reverse in mid-die state. Stage C is late die state, also unconfirmed. The East-West displacement pattern suggests a lateral or rotational correction during die preparation. The large wartime mintmark above Monticello makes the secondary punch impressions flanking the primary P immediately apparent under magnification once the characteristic displacement pattern is recognized. Collectors confirm the silver alloy by the coins' non-magnetic response; RPM-019 adds a layer of variety interest to this historically significant wartime issue.
