1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-017

Description

Exhibiting a P/P/P East, West triple-punched mintmark, this VarietyVista-documented 1944-P wartime silver Jefferson Nickel documents three separate punch contacts from opposing directions. Die markers UVC-164 / DMR-018: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse and obverse at MDS; Stage C with a die crack from the dome through the mintmark to rim at K-12:00 at LMDS, a die crack from O of OF north to the steps right of C of MONTICELLO, and obverse at LDS; Stage D with reverse die cracks stronger at VLDS and a die crack north-south with jog through the hair to rim at K-12:00 at VLDS. The Stage D hair crack with a directional jog is diagnostically distinctive. Struck in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized P above Monticello distinguished wartime silver alloy from standard copper-nickel composition.
