1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-011

Description

Recorded by VarietyVista, the 1944 RPM-011 Jefferson Nickel features a P/P East repunched mintmark where the secondary large P impression is displaced eastward from the primary placement above Monticello's dome on the reverse. Die markers UVC-158 / DMR-012 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with both reverse and obverse at MDS; and Stage C with reverse and obverse at LDS. The eastward displacement direction indicates the initial P punch was placed slightly west of the intended position, and the corrective second punch moved the final placement further east, leaving the remnant of the first impression visible to the west of the primary letter's position. The Jefferson Nickel was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 1944 in the wartime silver alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, weighing 5.0 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. Felix Schlag's design features Jefferson's portrait on the obverse and the Monticello reverse with the oversized P mintmark placed conspicuously above the dome. The 1944 issue represents the third full year of wartime silver alloy production, and by this point the Mint's die shop had developed substantial experience with the large P punch — yet RPM varieties continued to appear regularly, as the physical demands of manual punch application to hundreds of working dies made occasional misalignment statistically inevitable regardless of operator experience. As the 11th cataloged RPM for the 1944-P wartime nickel, this variety falls in the lower-to-middle range of the documented population, and collectors searching for it should examine the western edge of the P where the remnant first impression is most visible, particularly at the vertical stroke and upper curve.
