1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-008

Description

The 1944-P Jefferson Nickel Wartime Silver Alloy RPM-008, documented by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-155 and DMR-009, is a repunched mintmark variety on one of the 35% silver alloy issues produced to conserve nickel during World War II. The large mintmark placed above Monticello on wartime Jefferson Nickels makes repunched mintmarks particularly visible. Three die stages are recorded. Stage A (Early Die State) is unconfirmed. Stage B (Middle Die State) is marked by die scratches running north to south in the far right wing porch bay of Monticello on the reverse, along with two die cracks running southeast in the hair on the obverse. Stage C (Late Die State) is unconfirmed. The diagnostic die cracks into the hair during Stage B provide a physical anchor for identifying mid-life specimens. The large mintmark format on wartime nickels was introduced to allow easy identification of the silver composition — and coincidentally made repunched mintmarks more observable than on smaller-mintmark issues.
