1944 Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

One of the most distinctive mintmark varieties in the wartime silver nickel series, the 1944-P Jefferson Nickel RPM-007 is a triple-punched P/P/P mintmark with displacements to the east and west — the large P punch was applied a minimum of three times, with lateral shifts in both directions before the final placement was achieved. Cataloged as UVC-154 and DMR-008, this bidirectional triple repunching creates a layered mintmark with secondary impressions on opposite sides of the primary, a pattern substantially more complex than a simple directional double-punch. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B is mid die state (unconfirmed); Stage C shows both obverse and reverse at late die state. Struck in the wartime alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese, the 1944-P wartime silver nickel carries the large P above Monticello that distinguished Philadelphia-struck wartime issues. The triple P/P/P with east and west displacement makes RPM-007 among the most visually complex mintmark repunching events documented for the 1944-P date.
