1944-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Struck from a Denver Mint obverse die bearing moderate Class VI extra thickness on the date digits, this 1944-D Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die is cataloged as WDDO-002 in the Wexler Doubled Die Files. The extra thickness manifests as a subtle broadening of each numeral rather than a directional spread, consistent with Class VI hub doubling where die steel yields unevenly during impression. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge to the right of the Y in LIBERTY, along with a die crack running southwest to northeast from behind Lincoln's ear through the top of the ear, where it intersects a second crack running west-southwest to east-northeast through the upper forehead. On the reverse, the die reached very late die state, and a die crack descends along the right side of the T in CENT. The Wexler Team attributed this variety under Wexler Variety ID 1944-D 1¢ WDDO-002. The convergence of two intersecting obverse die cracks through the portrait creates a distinctive diagnostic fingerprint that aids authentication of this wartime Lincoln cent doubled die.
