Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1944D-1DO-015, the 1944-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-031 is a hub doubling variety on the Lincoln Wheat Cent struck at the Denver Mint. The 1944-D cent was produced in the standard wartime "shell case" composition of 95% copper and 5% zinc (no tin), weighing 3.11 grams at 19.05 mm diameter — part of the massive wartime production that saw Denver strike over 430 million cents that year. The doubling manifests in three distinct areas: an extra eyelid visible to the south of Lincoln's normal eyelid, doubling inside the numeral 9 spreading southward, and doubling beneath the letters TY in LIBERTY. Obverse die markers include die scratches running northeast to southwest left of and through the digits 19 in the date, plus light die scratches running mostly north to south through the letters ERT in LIBERTY. The reverse exhibits a heavy die scratch or gouge running through the lower S in PLURIBUS extending to the upper left side of the second dot, along with criss-crossing die scratches running through the word STATES. The Coppercoins cross-reference as 1944D-1DO-015 provides an independent confirmation of this variety's legitimacy through a second attribution system. Victor David Brenner's wheat ears reverse design, in production from 1909 through 1958, frames the denomination and national motto between two sheaves of wheat.
