1944-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-022

Description

The 1944-D Lincoln Wheat Cent WDDO-022, attributed by the Wexler team, is most recognized for a distinctive eyelid doubling — two extra eyelids appear just beneath the normal eyelid on Lincoln's portrait. Obverse die markers include nearly horizontal and parallel die scratches on Lincoln's cheek to the right of his lower ear, as well as short die scratches on the collar to the upper left of the bow tie. Reverse die markers include a nearly vertical die scratch to the left of the C in CENT and a small die gouge (appearing as a dot) inside the upper D in UNITED. This coin is also listed as WRPM-003, a D/D North repunched mintmark on the same die. The combination of a doubled die obverse and a repunched mintmark on a single coin makes this a multi-variety example of considerable interest to Lincoln cent specialists.
