1944-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-021
Error
Description
Sharing its obverse die with a repunched mintmark variety, this 1944-D Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die obverse is notable for an extra eyelid visible just below the normal eyelid on Lincoln’s portrait. The same obverse die is listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1944-D 1¢ WRPM-004, a D/D Tilted (Rotated), creating a die marriage that carries two collectible attributions on a single coin. Obverse die markers include a series of wavy die gouges to the upper right of the Y in LIBERTY, two die gouges below the O of GOD, and a die scratch to the lower right of the E of WE. On the reverse, two light die scratches appear below the O of OF. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1944-D 1¢ WDDO-021 and cross-referenced as CONECA designation pending, the DDO/RPM die marriage adds significant appeal for variety collectors who prize multiple attributions on wartime-era Lincoln Cents. The extra eyelid feature provides an accessible diagnostic that can be spotted without extreme magnification.
