1943-S Doubled Die Obverse DDO-011

Description

Cataloged as DDO-011 (UVC-0361, DMR-012), this 1943-S Washington quarter presents a medium spread on LIBERTY with a half vertical bar effect, accompanied by light spreading on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the ribbon end. Three die stages are documented. Stage A and Stage B are early and mid-die-state respectively, both unconfirmed for supplementary markers. Stage C in late die state shows a light die crack across the hair, a die crack across the bust, a crack down the eagle's right wing, and a crack across the upper MERICA of AMERICA. The 1943-S was struck in 90% silver during wartime at the San Francisco Mint. The medium LIBERTY spread with the distinctive half vertical bar is the quickest identification point, while the Stage C crack network spanning both sides confirms advanced die deterioration.
