1943-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-012
Error
Description
A combination die on the wartime 1943-S zinc-coated steel Lincoln Wheat Cent, WDDO-012 shares its obverse die with WRPM-011 (a repunched mint mark listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1943-S 1c WRPM-011), making this a DDO and RPM combo variety. Die scratches to the west of the W in WE run west-northwest, and heavy concentric die scratches are present by the rim to the southeast of the second T in TRUST. A vertical die clash appears in front of the throat on the obverse. On the reverse, multiple die chips are present below the UR in PLURIBUS, and a die chip sits at the east side of the E of ONE at the center horizontal bar. The 1943 Lincoln Cents are the only year in the series struck on zinc-coated steel planchets, a wartime measure to conserve copper for military use. The combination of hub doubling on the obverse with a repunched S mint mark on the same die documents two separate production anomalies — the DDO from a hubbing shift and the RPM from an imprecise second impression of the mint mark punch.
