1943-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-018
Error
Description
WDDO-018 on the 1943-S Lincoln Wheat Cent — zinc-coated steel issue is a Wexler-attributed doubled die obverse, Variety ID 1943-S 1¢ WDDO-018. Doubling characteristics are documented in the die marker record for this variety. Obverse die markers include a horizontal die gouge northwest of the 3 near the rim, concentric die scratches above WE of WE TRUST, a die chip from the W side of the T in TRUST, and concentric die scratches at the rim below the bust. Reverse die markers include a die gouge against the rim above RI in PLURIBUS, die damage inside the N of CENT, and a die dot inside the U of UNITED. The 1943-S Lincoln Cent is struck on zinc-coated steel planchets — a wartime composition introduced because of copper scarcity — and the steel surface can complicate authentication if post-mint oxidation obscures die markers. WDDO-018 carries no CONECA cross-reference. Verifying attribution requires matching all documented die markers against known reference specimens, with the die gouge northwest of the 3 and the die dot inside U of UNITED serving as the most durable identifiers across die states.
