1943-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-014
Error
Description
Attributed by Jim Shriver and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #17, this 1943-S Jefferson Nickel WDDO-014 combines two die varieties on a single coin: Class II Distorted Hub Doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST and a repunched mintmark on the reverse cataloged as WRPM-011, showing an S/S Tilted orientation. The Class II designation indicates doubling from a distorted hub rather than a shifted one, producing characteristic displacement different from common Class I rotated varieties. The S/S Tilted RPM means the second mintmark punch was applied at a rotated angle, creating overlapping S images with angular rather than directional displacement. Struck in the 35% silver wartime alloy adopted in 1942 to conserve nickel for military use, the 1943-S carries the large S mintmark above Monticello. The dual-variety status means attribution requires confirming both the obverse hub distortion on the motto and the tilted reverse mintmark as separate manufacturing events. Wexler Variety ID: 1943-S WDDO-014. Class II, Distorted Hub DoublingClose Class II spread shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, seen best on GOD. Die Markers: Obverse: Very weak N/S die crack through the center of the collar. NE/SW die crack through the upper hair. A second NNW/SSE die crack right of the previous. Die crack south from the top of the dome that turns right and runs toward the bottom of the third pillar. Die crack across the top of the right roof. Thin concentric die scratches on the center of the building. N/S die scratches above the small right window.
