1943-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-013
ErrorDescription
Brian Ribar attributed this 1943-S Jefferson Nickel obverse doubled die as WDDO-013 (Wexler Variety ID: 1943-S WDDO-013), classifying the doubling as Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling. The wartime silver alloy nickel — composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese — is recognized by its large S mintmark placed above Monticello rather than at the right of the reverse. The Class II spread shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the obverse star, and the date. The same working die also carries an RPM: the S mintmark is repunched with the original punch tilted, creating a doubled die and repunched mintmark combination. Obverse die markers include a die scratch in the field to the right of Jefferson's ponytail. Reverse die markers: a die gouge right of the small right window of Monticello; die scratches above that same window; a die gouge below the E of CENT; a slanted die scratch through the upper portion of the small right semicircular window; and the tilted S/S RPM above Monticello. The convergence of doubling, RPM, and a well-documented marker set makes WDDO-013 among the more fully characterized 1943-S nickel varieties.
