1943-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010

Description

Classified as Class I Rotated Hub Doubling, this tenth Wexler-designated doubled die obverse for the 1943-S wartime silver alloy Jefferson Nickel exhibits a strong spread visible on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, and the date. Class I doubling results from the hub being rotated between impressions during die manufacture, creating a rotational displacement where the secondary image arcs away from the primary in a curved pattern rather than shifting in a uniform linear direction. Attributed by Brian A. Ribar and cross-referenced as Wexler 1943-S WDDO-010. The 1943-S wartime nickel carries the distinctive large S mintmark above Monticello's dome, part of the same silver-alloy program that introduced the first-ever P mintmark on Philadelphia issues. Diagnostic die markers include heavy die gouges above the first T of TRUST on the obverse, a die gouge at the lower left of the second S of STATES on the reverse, and a slanted die crack on the right side of Monticello's dome. The dome crack is particularly notable as a die marker because it intersects with the architectural centerpiece of Felix Schlag's reverse design, making it readily identifiable during attribution.
