1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-013
Error
Description
Cataloged as DDO-013 under the VarietyVista attribution system (UVC-1569, DMR-025), this 1943 Lincoln Wheat Cent displays a medium spread on the 9 of the date and on the east side of the last T of TRUST. Because 1943 cents were struck on zinc-coated steel planchets due to wartime copper conservation, doubled dies from this year carry additional collector interest as novelties of the emergency composition. Three die stages have been identified for this variety. Stage A represents early die state, though it remains unconfirmed. Stage B places the obverse at mid-die state, accompanied by a light die crack running from the lower right wheat stalk to the rim. Stage C is cataloged as late die state, also unconfirmed. The spread, while classified as medium, is best observed with magnification on the final T of IN GOD WE TRUST, where the misalignment is most pronounced. Collectors searching for this variety should focus on the date numerals first, as the shifted 9 provides the quickest identification point before confirming the TRUST doubling.
