1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

Recorded by VarietyVista with the internal tracking code UVC-1547 and die marriage reference DMR-003, this 1943 Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a medium spread on the lower RTY of LIBERTY — a partial-word doubling pattern indicating the hub displacement vector was most pronounced at the right side of the motto. Die stage documentation tracks three states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die-state showing a light die crack over the V.D.B. designer initials, a light die crack from Lincoln's head to the rim through the W of WE, and a die clash at the throat with the reverse at MDS, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The progressive die crack system — first appearing over the VDB initials and then extending from the portrait to the rim — documents the mechanical fatigue path through the die steel as repeated striking impacts propagated fractures along the obverse die's weakest structural lines. The 1943 Lincoln Wheat Cent holds unique significance as the only year the cent was struck in zinc-coated steel rather than bronze, a wartime measure to conserve copper for military needs.
