1943 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-019

Description

Attributed under Wexler Variety ID 1943 1¢ WDDO-019 with no other known cross-references, this 1943 Lincoln Wheat Cent displays strong Class V clockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 4:00 on the Y of LIBERTY and the lower ear. Class V doubling produces a fan-like spread radiating from a fixed pivot. The doubling appears on the underside of the bowtie, the horizontal crossbar of the 4, and as an extra eyelid southeast of the normal eyelid — this last feature offering a useful diagnostic for quick identification. Obverse die markers include a light horizontal die scratch between the tops of T and R in TRUST. The reverse carries multiple markers: a die scratch east-southeast from the rim above RIB of PLURIBUS, a die gouge between the lower R and I of PLURIBUS, a die scratch north-south left of the top of the right wheat ear, and a die scratch southwest from center of E in CENT. Struck on zinc-coated steel at Philadelphia during wartime metal conservation, nineteen documented doubled die obverses for the 1943 date attest to intensive variety research.
