1943 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-023
Error
Description
DDO-023 on the 1943 Lincoln Wheat Cent is catalogued by VarietyVista under die pair UVC-3322, DMR-037. The 1943 Lincoln Cent was struck in zinc-coated steel rather than bronze, as copper was diverted to wartime production needs. The obverse exhibits a light spread on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. Die state progression covers three documented stages: Stage A is Early Die State; Stage B advances to a state defined by a die crack down the lapel of Lincoln's coat, a die crack on the forehead, and a die clash visible at the throat and at the front of the date — evidence that the obverse and reverse dies struck each other without a planchet, transferring clash marks near the throat and date area; Stage C is Late Die State. The die clash at the throat in Stage B is a particularly unusual diagnostic given the proximity to the portrait. Cross-reference: VarietyVista DDO-023, UVC-3322, DMR-037.
