1943-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-037

Description

An extra eyelid below the normal eyelid defines this 1943-D Lincoln steel cent variety, cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1943-D 1 cent WDDO-037. The obverse also carries a repunched mintmark listed in the Wexler RPM Files as 1943-D 1 cent WRPM-017, showing D/D East, making this a dual-attribution variety. A wavy die gouge below the R of TRUST and a die crack above VDB provide additional obverse diagnostics. The reverse presents extensive cracking: one crack runs from the top of the O in ONE through the first U of PLURIBUS and onto the rim, while a second crack starts at the furthest right wheat line of the right wheat stalk, runs south through the kernels, and splits into two branches, one heading to the rim and the other continuing south nearly to the stalk tail. Steel cent production in 1943 used zinc-coated steel planchets, and the harder material placed greater stress on the dies, accelerating crack formation. The extra eyelid feature provides the most immediate visual diagnostic, clearly visible under moderate magnification as a secondary curved line below Liberty's eye.
