1943-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

Struck in the wartime silver alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, this 1943-D Jefferson Nickel RPM-005 was documented by VarietyVista and tracks four stages across two die pairings. Die markers UVC-121 / DMR-006: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die gouge north from C of AMERICA to the building and a light die crack in hair at MDS; Stage C with the die gouge worn away, a die crack from N of CENTS south to rim through O of OF, and a stronger die crack in hair at LDS. A second pairing UVC-1127 / DMR-027 introduces Stage D with a die crack from the right dome south into pillar #3 at VLDS, an obverse die change at LMDS, and a light die crack in hair. The dome-to-pillar crack on Monticello's facade precisely locates the failure within the architectural detail of Felix Schlag's reverse design. Weighing 5.0 grams at 21.21 mm, the oversized D above Monticello distinguishes wartime silver content.
