1943-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-010

Description

Tracked by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-128 and DMR-013, the 1943-D RPM-010 is a repunched mintmark variety on a 1943-D Jefferson Nickel from the Wartime Silver Alloy period. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at early die state (EDS, unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS, unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The 1943-D Jefferson Nickel belongs to the Wartime Silver Alloy subseries produced from mid-1942 through 1945, when the standard copper-nickel composition was replaced with an alloy of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese to conserve nickel for the war effort. These wartime nickels feature a distinctive oversized mintmark placed above the dome of Monticello on the reverse — a location change from the standard pre-war position to the right of the building, making the wartime issues immediately recognizable. The large D mintmark on the 1943-D wartime nickel provides an exceptionally clear canvas for examining repunched mintmark evidence, as the enlarged letter format amplifies the visual displacement between primary and secondary punch impressions. Felix Schlag designed the Jefferson Nickel with the Monticello reverse in 1938. Each wartime nickel weighs 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The Denver Mint produced approximately 15.3 million wartime nickels in 1943, and repunched mintmark varieties from this period document the manual process of applying the oversized mintmark punches — a format the engravers had less experience with compared to the smaller, conventionally positioned mintmarks used before and after the war years. The UVC-128 die designation allows collectors to track this specific working die across different attributed varieties.
