1942-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001

Description

Walking Liberty Half Dollars, struck in 90% silver from 1916 through 1947, are considered among the most artistically distinguished designs in American coinage history. The 1942-S WDDO-001 carries cross-references from three major variety guides: CONECA 1-O-IV, Cherrypickers' Guide FS-50-1942S-101, and Fox V-106. The Class IV doubling — spread to the north — is visible below the chin, left of the neck, left of the lower face, below the right breast, along the extended arm, and across the center of the gown, distributing the secondary hub impression broadly across the obverse design. Obverse die markers include a die scratch that follows the contour of the rim above LIB of LIBERTY. Reverse die markers include a die gouge below the left lower leg of the R in PLURIBUS and three short die scratches running southwest toward the pine needle cluster. The combination of a widespread Class IV spread with multi-zone die markers and three independent reference guide attributions makes WDDO-001 one of the most thoroughly documented varieties in the 1942-S Walking Liberty series.
