1942 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-016
ErrorDescription
Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1942 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent doubled die obverse displays an extra eyelid on Lincoln's portrait, one of the more visually distinctive diagnostic markers found on doubled die varieties of this denomination. The extra eyelid results from hub doubling that shifted the die impression slightly between hubbing impressions, creating a secondary outline visible on the upper eyelid area. Cross-referenced as Coppercoins 1942P-1DO-019, this variety benefits from dual catalog documentation across independent attribution services. The 1942 Philadelphia Cent was struck during the final year of standard bronze composition before the wartime shift to zinc-coated steel in 1943, making 1942-P cents the last of the traditional copper alloy Wheat Cents before that historic one-year change. Philadelphia produced over 657 million cents in 1942, an enormous output that consumed many die pairs and generated numerous die varieties. The extra eyelid feature, while requiring magnification to confirm, provides a reliable attribution point that distinguishes WDDO-016 from the fifteen other doubled die obverses cataloged for this date. Die Markers: Obverse: Short die scratch runs between 4 and 2 in the date. Light die scratches run NE/SW through the lower to middle 1 and 9 in the date. Short die scratch near the rim between the S and T in TRUST. Reverse: Small die gouge upper right side of B in PLURIBUS.
