1942 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-011

Description

Featuring a strong Class V counterclockwise spread from a pivot at approximately 3:00, the 1942 WDDO-011 Lincoln Wheat Cent shows pronounced doubling on IN, LIBERTY, and the back of Lincoln's coat. The pivoted mechanism creates spread that increases with distance from the pivot point. Obverse markers include several die scratches running SSW to NNE between GOD and WE. The reverse carries a light scratch from WNW to ESE above and between the N and second U in UNUM. The earliest known report was a coin found by Delma K. Romines. Cross-referenced as CONECA 4-O-V, Cherrypickers FS-01-1942-102 (018.7), Coppercoins 1942P-1DO-004, and Wexler Variety ID 1942 1-cent WDDO-011. The Cherrypickers listing indicates sufficient market significance for inclusion in that selective guide. Struck at Philadelphia during wartime production, the 1942 Wheat Cent preceded the 1943 steel cent transition by one year.
