1942 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-010
Error
Description
Struck from specially prepared proof dies that received extra polishing and multiple impressions for sharper detail, this 1942 Lincoln Wheat Cent proof exhibits close counterclockwise spread on WE and TRUST. The proof striking process, with its higher pressure and polished planchets, often renders doubled die features with exceptional clarity against the mirrored fields. Obverse die markers include a short vertical die gouge between the upper S and T in TRUST and a short curving die gouge southeast of the second T in TRUST. The reverse carries a strong short vertical die gouge between the upper U and S in PLURIBUS along with a short diagonal die gouge between the lower N and U in UNUM. Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as 1942 1-cent Proof WDDO-010, this variety demonstrates how even close hub doubling becomes highly collectible when combined with the pristine surfaces characteristic of proof coinage from the early 1940s Philadelphia Mint.
