1942 Doubled Die Obverse DDO-008
Error
Description
Cross-referenced as FS-104 in the Cherry Pickers' Guide and tracked by VarietyVista under UVC-1525 with DMR-010, the 1942 Philadelphia Lincoln Wheat Cent DDO-008 delivers a strong spread to the south on "19" of the date, Lincoln's tie, eye, nose, and top of head. The southward directional spread — affecting multiple areas of Lincoln's portrait as well as the date — indicates the hub doubling involved a lateral shift that displaced design elements downward relative to each other, creating visible separation on the portrait's features and the date numerals closest to the direction of movement. The FS-104 designation places this as the fourth most significant doubled die obverse for 1942 in the Fivaz-Stanton reference hierarchy, ensuring ongoing collector demand and dealer awareness. Three die stages are documented: Stage A in Early Die State is unconfirmed; Stage B at Mid Die State introduces a long die gouge under the bust, with the reverse also showing MDS characteristics; Stage C in Late Die State is unconfirmed. The long die gouge under the bust provides an excellent attribution marker that is often visible even without magnification. Eight doubled die obverses documented for the 1942 date represents a rich variety catalog for this wartime issue, and DDO-008's strong spread on portrait features makes it one of the more visually dramatic entries in the group. Philadelphia's 1942 cent production of 657,796,000 pieces consumed hundreds of working die pairs, and each pair carried independent probability of hub doubling during manufacture. Wheat Cent collectors who specialize in doubled dies often rank the 1942-P as one of the most rewarding dates to search.
