Documented by VarietyVista, the 1942 RPM-030 Jefferson Nickel is a wartime silver alloy issue exhibiting P/P West. Die markers UVC-040 / DMR-035 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C with reverse at LDS and a light die crack in Jefferson's hair at LDS. The hair crack documents structural fatigue in the high-relief portrait area. P/P West. Struck at Philadelphia in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese, weighing 5.0 grams at 21.21 mm diameter, this represents the first year of wartime emergency composition. The 30th cataloged RPM documents the extensive variety population from this historic date — the first American coin to carry a Philadelphia P mintmark, adopted so the public could identify silver-content wartime coins.
