Description
Struck during the first year of the wartime silver alloy composition, this 1942 Jefferson Nickel DDO-001 exhibits hub doubling on the obverse where misalignment during the die hubbing process created visible doubled impressions across design elements. Documented by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-039 / DMR-034, the variety tracks three progressive stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 1942-P wartime nickel introduced the first Philadelphia mintmark on U.S. coinage to distinguish the emergency silver-bearing alloy from standard copper-nickel issues. The DDO-001 designation indicates this was the earliest identified or most prominent doubled die obverse for the date.
