1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-027

Description

Documented by VarietyVista, this 1942 Philadelphia wartime silver Jefferson Nickel is the 27th cataloged repunched mintmark for the date, reflecting the extraordinary RPM output from the first year that Philadelphia coins carried a mintmark. Die markers UVC-037 / DMR-032 track four stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with reverse at MDS and a small die gouge dot in front of the upper lip at MDS; Stage C with numerous fine die scratches on reverse at LDS and obverse at LDS; Stage D with reverse die scratches worn away at VLDS and obverse at VLDS. The reverse scratches appearing at LDS and then wearing away by VLDS documents how continued striking can erase surface damage. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the oversized P above Monticello was mandated to distinguish silver-content coins.
