1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-023

Description

Showing a P/P South displacement, this twenty-third documented repunched mint mark for the 1942 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel belongs to the inaugural year of the wartime silver alloy composition. The 1942-P was the first U.S. coin to carry a Philadelphia mint mark in regular production, with the large P placed above Monticello on the reverse to distinguish the silver-content coins from earlier copper-nickel issues. The southward repunch shows a secondary impression of the large P displaced below the primary strike. Cataloged by VarietyVista under UVC-033 and DMR-028, three die stages track the variety's development. Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed. Stage B at mid-die-state shows a die crack from the S of PLURIBUS south to the dome and another crack from the right dome south to the rim between pillars 3 and 4 through the E of CENTS, with the obverse also at MDS. Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed. Twenty-three RPMs for a single date reflects the substantial die pair count needed for wartime nickel production at Philadelphia.
