Error
Description
Recorded by VarietyVista, this 1942-P wartime silver Jefferson Nickel shows progressive die crack expansion across four states. Die markers UVC-030 / DMR-025: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with a die crack from the right dome south between pillar #3 and #4 at MDS, obverse at MDS; Stage C with a light die crack through the building continuing through E of MONTICELLO to F of OF at LMDS, obverse at LMDS; Stage D with a die crack from rim through the mintmark to the dome at LDS, obverse at LDS. The Stage D crack traversing from rim through the oversized P mintmark into Monticello's dome documents terminal structural failure. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm during the first year of wartime silver alloy production, when Congress mandated nickel conservation for military armor.
