Description
Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in the emergency wartime alloy, this 1942-P Jefferson Nickel bears the first-ever P mintmark on any U.S. coin, introduced to distinguish the 35% silver composition from standard copper-nickel issues. Die markers UVC-023 / DMR-018 documented by VarietyVista track three stages: Stage A with reverse and obverse at EDS; Stage B with a die crack south from mintmark to dome at MDS, a die crack from right dome south between pillar #3 and #4 to N of CENTS, and obverse at MDS; Stage C with a die crack south from the rim through the right leg of the second U of PLURIBUS to mintmark at LDS and obverse at LDS. The expanding network of structural cracks centered on Monticello's dome documents progressive die failure. Composed of 56% copper, 35% silver, and 9% manganese at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm.
