1942 Repunched Mintmark RPM-011

Description

Cataloged as UVC-020 and DMR-015, this 1942-P Jefferson Nickel repunched mintmark variety is one of the earliest documented RPMs in the wartime silver alloy series. The large P mintmark positioned above Monticello on the reverse — the first time Philadelphia used a mintmark on any U.S. coin — was applied by hand punch to each working die, making positional variation an inherent byproduct of production. Three die stages track this variety's emission: Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B shows both obverse and reverse at mid die state; Stage C is late die state (unconfirmed). Struck in the wartime alloy of 35% silver, 56% copper, and 9% manganese adopted in 1942 to conserve nickel for military use, these coins differ markedly in composition and mintmark convention from all other Jefferson Nickel issues. The secondary P impression is the primary attribution diagnostic, distinguishing RPM-011 from the other cataloged 1942-P wartime nickel repunched mintmark varieties.
